Centre for Mathematical Sciences, Wilberforce Road, Cambridge CB3 0WAAfter a successful 2025 Summer School, the 2026 ICCS Summer School will again bring together Schmidt Sciences-funded VESRI teams and external researchers for a week of collaborative, hands-on learning and expert-led sessions supporting their scientific work.
About
What happens at an ICCS Summer School?
The programme will feature a blend of:
- Keynote speeches
- Training sessions and technical workshops
- Scientific presentations
- Collaborative and social events.
You will receive tuition and guidance from leading experts at the University of Cambridge. Attendees are expected to attend all parts of the programme.
What will be covered?
Proposed topics include (but are not limited to):
- Version control (Git and GitHub) – both introductory and intermediate sessions
- RSE skills – how to apply research software engineering principles to write higher-quality code, reduce bugs, and facilitate re-use
- Debugging – leveraging debugging tools for effectively understanding program behaviour and diagnosing problems
- AI for software engineering – leveraging generative AI tools effectively for software engineering
- GenAI
- Machine learning
- Introduction to High Performance Computing – hardware, performance limits, programming models, profiling, debugging.

Learning outcomes
We aim for attendees to:
- Understand the fundamental principles of research software engineering tools used in climate science
- Gain practical experience in core technical skills for collaborative research via hands-on workshops eg. in version control and computational workflows to write higher-quality code and facilitate re-use
- Learn and acquire proficiency in different programming languages used in climate science models
- Gain a practical understanding of ML techniques and how they can be applied in climate science
- Discover how generative AI tools can be used effectively for scientific software development
- Connect and collaborate with attendees from a diverse range of fields within climate science.
Costs
Attendance at the annual Summer School is free for members of the Schmidt Sciences community.
A limited number of bursaries will be available, and applications can be submitted through the registration form once it opens.
External participants are asked to pay a registration fee, which covers accommodation and subsistence. The cost of attendance will start at approximately £150 to attend the sessions only.
