Widening participation
In selecting for this programme, consideration will be given to our objective to widen participation in mathematical research, paying particular attention to ethnicity. Programme structure
Project
You will work on your project throughout the duration of your internship under the direction of your Supervisor.
Events
The Faculty of Mathematics hosts between 50 and 60 mathematics research interns each summer. Throughout your internship there will be several events which you can attend. This will include social events, such as welcome drinks for you to meet and get to know other interns, seminars with invited speakers, and career-focused events to provide help and information to you as you consider your future career.
Project presentation
You will be invited to deliver a short talk on your project at the Cambridge Mathematics Placements (CMP) Presentation Day, which will take place in the Centre for Mathematical Sciences.
The CMP Presentation Day is the annual showcase of the projects undertaken by Cambridge maths students outside of the Faculty, both academic and industrial – as such it is a fantastic networking opportunity! It will be a full-day event concluding with drinks and dinner at a Cambridge college.
Report
At the end of the programme, all interns will be required to write an internal report as well as communication pieces for all our platforms (a blog on our website, Instagram and LinkedIn posts) about your experience.
Feedback
After the end of your project we will send you a feedback questionnaire to complete. It is a requirement of the programme to complete this. Your feedback is essential to help us build on the programme and make improvements in future years.
Our 2025 interns’ experiences
"Overall, I have come away from this project with a broader view of the process that goes into data-driven modelling in environmental research, as well as experience training models (and fixing them when they break!)."
"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as an intern at ICCS, through which I have been given the opportunity to collaborate with one of the leading researchers in the machine learning for climate field. Both the research and networking opportunities have been invaluable. This experience has been electric, and one I would highly recommend to anyone considering applying in the future!"
