Mathematical modelling work by Charles Powell, an Early Career Researcher based at ICCS, is the focus of an article in Plus magazine.
Inigo is funding a three-year research programme at ICCS called InSPIRe – “Inigo Storm Prediction and Impact Research” – which will apply the latest advances in computing and artificial intelligence to deepen understanding of how climate change has affected the risk of hurricanes. These kinds of extreme weather events have a devastating impact on communities around the world and are a significant driver of insurance claims.
At the end of the 2024 hurricane season, Charles carried out analysis to look at how forecasts compared with real-world events. But while 2024 was slightly peculiar, 2025 proved to be even more interesting. Overall hurricane activity was below average, but the storms that did happen were more vicious. Four of the five hurricanes that occurred were major, and three reached the highest category of five.
